Terri Schiavo's husband was right.
Autopsy results released today found that Terri Schiavo had massive and irrevocable brain damage. She was also blind and there were no signs of abuse. The 41-year-old Schiavo died in March after her husband won a legal battle with her parents over the removal of her feeding tube. Pinellas County medical examiner Jon Thogmartin said she died of dehydration, and not starvation, there was no chance her condition could have improved.
--- Her brain was profoundly atrophied. The brain weighed 615 grams, roughly half of the expected weight of a human brain. There was massive neuronal loss or damage. This damage was irreversible, and no amount of therapy or treatment would have regenerated the massive loss of neurons.
The autopsy findings were consistent with her husband’s contention that Terri Schiavo was in a persistent vegetative state. The cause of her original collapse was left undetermined.
A Food and Drug Administration staff review found that a new heart failure drug BiDil reduced deaths and hospitalizations in African-Americans. NitroMed, the company that makes BiDil, is specifically targeting the medicine to black patients. An advisory panel meets tomorrow to decide whether to recommend it for FDA approval.
Five of the nation’s largest labor unions moved closer to breaking away from the AFL-CIO today. The heads of the affiliates announced the formation of the ‘Change to Win’ Coalition. In Washington, Teamsters president James Hoffa said the coalition was formed to bolster union membership rolls.

Michael Jackson (2)
AP Network News. I’m Warren Levinson at the courthouse in Santa Maria, California where a jury has reached a verdict in the case of Michael Jackson. The pop star’s charged with 10 counts of child molestation and conspiracy. If convicted, he faces the possibility of years in prison. The case was painted less as has the state proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt and more as who do you believe, a particularly flaky Michael Jackson or a particularly flaky accuser and his mother. Jackson has arrived at the courthouse. The jury is being assembled. The verdict is expected to be read within a few minutes. I’m Warren Levinson in Santa Maria, California. Now with more news, here’s Ed Donahue.
A cargo plane crashed today shortly after takeoff from the airport in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It’s not known if anyone was killed. Three people were onboard. The plane caught fire after crashing. Televised coverage showed firefighters putting out the fire with water and foam in a roadway in a tree-lined residential area.
The government says more than a million Americans are believed to be living with HIV. Dr. Ron Valdiserri with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the new rapid testing for AIDS increases the possibility that at-risk people will get diagnosed.
--- With traditional HIV tests, with their typical 1-2 week waiting period, many people do not return to find out their test results.
Valdiserri says better medicines are keeping more people with HIV alive.
The Senate today is belatedly apologizing for failing to stop one of the great stains on American democracy. It is adopting by voice vote a resolution expressing regret for the Senate’s unwillingness for years to pass a law stopping lynching. A woman whose ancestor was a victim of lynching is at the Capitol Hill vote.
Reputed Ku Klux Klansman Edgar Killen has been silent through the first day of jury deliberations in his murder trial in Philadelphia, Mississippi. The 80-year-old is accused of killing three civil rights workers back in 1964.
In Aruba, lawyers for two former hotel security guards detained for more than a week in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway filed motions in court today arguing there isn’t any evidence against them and they should be released. Three other people are also being held. Holloway’s mother Beth Holloway Twitty says the men who were with Natalee before she disappeared have to tell investigators what they know.
--- We have to have answers from these three young men. They hold the key. They had the answers. It’s going to be up to government to put enough pressure on these individuals to divulge the information. They know where my daughter is.
Holloway was on NBC’s Today Show.
A mother and three children were killed when fire swept through a three-family home in Bridgeport, Connecticut early today. The children’s father is in the hospital in critical condition. The family had come to the US in 2001 from Vietnam where the woman’s father had been an American soldier. There’s no word yet on what started today’s fire in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

tragic happening in Aruba
There might be a break in the Natalee Holloway case. She’s the 18-year-old Alabama girl who vanished in Aruba two weeks ago. Now the AP’s Peter Prengaman says a new search is underway near where she was staying.
--- In front of this hotel is kind of swampland. You have a lot of trees. You have some small chunks of swamp. And then right in front of it, you have the ocean. They’ve cordoned off this area. They are searching for this missing girl.
Meanwhile, one of the two men who’ve now been released from custody says one of the three others still in custody lied to police about what happened to Natalee.
Six tourists out for a sky tour of Manhattan got the ride of their lives and lived to tell about it. Their chopper crashed into the East River.
--- It is still afloat. The NYPD was able to drag it so now it’s moored up alongside the Pier 11 just north of the Wall Street Pier, and investigators will try to determine what happened.
Steve Sapp from the coast guard says nobody onboard was seriously hurt.
No more boys in bed. That’s what Michael Jackson says.
--- He’s not going to do that anymore because of the false charges that were brought here.
Thomas Mesereau, Jackson’s defense attorney, on NBC’s Today Show.
--- Michael is a very kind-hearted, child-like person. He’s been too nice to too many people. He’s allowed people to come into his life and run freely through his home, and that’s going to change.
Outside the Neverland Ranch today.
--- (???) intruder’s right.
--- How is Michael doing?
--- Michael is fine. He’s going to be all right.
Joe Jackson also said Michael will talk to the press, but he didn’t say when.
eBay didn’t exist when Bob Geldof staged the Live Aid concert, but now that he’s putting on Live 8:
--- When Bob Geldof announced the series of Live 8 concerts, he specifically said they would be free because his goal was to raise public awareness. His tagline was actually “We want you, not your money.” So he believes that people selling their tickets online are going against that principle and are only in it for the money. He calls it sick profiteering.
The AP’s Melissa Gray from London.
This is AP Network News.
Money matters. Wholesale inflation remains tame. The Producer Price Index dropped a larger-than-expected six-tenths of 1% in May.
--- What goes up in a big way usually comes down. And we saw the deflation of energy prices pull the overall PPI lower for the month of May.
Ken Mayland from Clearview Economics. Retail sales fell by a half a percent in May, the first decline in nine months.
The government says parents can help reduce injuries involving motorized scooters. A new study from the Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that powered scooters play a role in 10,000 emergency room visits a year, and that about two-thirds of all injuries happen in kids under 15. The agency is urging parents to make sure children wear bike helmets along with knee and elbow pads when they ride the scooters. Other advice is to have the kids stay on smooth surfaces and not ride the scooters at night.

The spring season of Oprah starts now.
All new, she’s 18 and admits she drinks until she blacks out.
“12 to 15 shots in a row.”
She was beaten by her teen boyfriend.

“It didn’t feel good…” “I had some problems with alcohol.”
“I used to love when I’d get to a passing out point.” Next!
Listen to this, Kareen is 13 and gets so angry she says she wants to rip people’s heads off,
16-year-old Sayeeda admits that she carves her own flesh

So from big cities to small town USA, there is a growing crisis, this is part II of our special,
Inside the Secret World of Teenage Girls.
Today, young women are confessing things they never openly talked about before.
To help them, we asked 3 strong women, strong women,
to give their best advice.
Tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams
and Ms. Jada Pinkett-Smith.
So a group of young girls opened up about their most pressing problems.
My niece Crushanda Lee who works with at risk teens
led this candid discussion and found out about a big problem going on at school.
Listen to this, almost 50% of girls in high school say they drink. Oh my goodness!
About a quarter of those call themselves ‘binge drinkers’.
According to Girls Vibe magazine, for the first time in history,
teenage girls are out drinking boys now.
Ok? Watch what may be happening in your daughter’s life.
“I started drinking at the very end of my 8th grade year.
When I drink now, I drink 12-15 shots in a row
until the point of just absolute blacking out.
I drink to numb the pain.
It’s mostly just stress and emotions, it just all builds up.
That’s what I turn to cuz it’s one of the few things I can control in my life.”
